Surrounded by his loving family, our dear and precious husband, father and friend, J. Paul Hewitt, 81, of Bailey’s Prairie, Texas peacefully passed away into the gentle and welcoming arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ on September 2, 2015. Paul, who was fluent in Spanish, was a brilliant intellectual with a great sense of humor, and was also a true Renaissance gentleman and generous and caring family man who very much enjoyed the arts, wine, fine dining and parties with family and friends, hunting, snow skiing, and international travel. He was a parishioner of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Angleton, TX and was devoted to his faith. After graduating from San Jacinto High School in Houston, Texas, Paul attended the University of Houston where he graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees in Petroleum and Mechanical Engineering. While at university, Paul was class President, a member of the Student Council, Student Assembly, Engineers Club, Bowling Club, Cavalier and Sigma Nu Fraternities and the Frontier Fiesta Association. In 1954, while still a student at the University of Houston, he joined Gray Tool Company preparing custom designed control systems for oil drilling. After two years with the company, Paul was promoted to the position of supervisor of sales and engineering. He was with Creole Petroleum Corporation (EXXON) in Eastern Venezuela from 1957 to 1963, holding various positions in engineering, production and drilling. Paul attended Harvard Business School, Section A, from 1963 to 1965, where he received his MBA in International Business. He later joined Camco Inc. in Houston, TX as Vice President and in 1972, joined Belmas, Inc. where he was elected President. Paul was active in the Republican Party and was a delegate to the State Convention in 1972. In 1976, Paul purchased the company, Polymetals located in State College, Pennsylvania and moved operations to Texas. He also headed Hewitt International, Hewitt-Terran (Marseille, France), Petrogas Process Systems, FabAlloy, Aztec Equities and Hewitt Cattle Company. He was a member of the Harvard Business School Club in which he held various offices, as well as the Harvard Club, American Welding Society, American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, Society of Petroleum Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Petroleum Institute, Gas Processors Association, Houston Club, International Club, Warwick Club, Petroleum Club of Houston, Galveston Artillery Club and the Westchester Club. He was also an ardent supporter of the performing arts and served on the board of the Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston, Texas. Paul, who delighted in his family and friends, leaves behind his devoted and cherished wife of 60 years, Patricia Joyce, his daughter, Holly Currie and her husband Robert; his sons, Jess Paul Hewitt III and wife Rochelle and John Rex Huston Hewitt as well as his grandchildren Audrie Rochelle Davis, Jess Paul Hewitt IV, Lauren Ashley Marie Amiton and husband Rian, John Rex Huston Hewitt Jr., Allyn Brock Hewitt, Shelby Abigail Currie and Corbin Noah Hewitt. Also left behind are his great grandchildren, Jaxon, John-Joseph and baby Sonja, as well as many other family members and friends, including his loyal and trusted assistant of 22 years, Mr. Francisco Guerrero.
Visitation for Mr. Hewitt will take place on Tuesday September 8th from 5 to 9 PM in the Grand Chapel of Forest Park Lawndale located at 6900 Lawndale, Houston, TX, 77023 with the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy beginning at 7 PM. The funeral Mass will take place at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart located at 1111 St. Joseph Parkway, Houston, TX, 77002 and will begin at 10 AM on Wednesday, September 9th.
