Irene Cleveland Smith passed away on March 9, 2012 after a quick and brave battle with cancer. Born on September 22, 1947 in Houston to A.F. “Pete” and Vera Mae Cleveland, she spent her teen years playing in the Bugle Corps at Reagan High School and falling in love with her future husband. At 13-years-old she knew she would marry the handsome Tom Smith, who she’d known all her life. They married in 1968 and spent 26 blissful years together, creating their own little happy family. Her later years were spent enjoying her family, especially her new grandson, traveling to hear her favorite Texas musicians, taking cruises with friends, volunteering as an EMT/ambulance driver, and managing a neurosurgery practice. She is preceded in death by her husband and her parents. She is survived by her daughters Andrea Johnson and Erica Smith; son-in-law Jeremiah Johnson and grandson James Thomas Johnson; sister Ann Knight and brother-in-law Larry Knight and their children and families all of Houston; and countless dear friends. The family would like to thank those friends, as well as Houston Hospice, for the endless support in making her comfortable in her final days.
Visitation with the family is on Monday, March 12 from five until eight o'clock in the evening at Heights Funeral Home.
A graveside service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, March 13, at The New Montgomery Cemetery. Directions from Houston: Take I-45 N into the county of Montgomery. From there take 105 West. Cross Highway 149. You will see a sign for the City Hall, and you will take a left on Old Plantersville Rd. On Old Plantersville Road, the cemetery will be on your right.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that contributions in memory of Irene be made to Houston Hospice or Houston Humane Society.
