He was born in Placetas, Cuba on October 15, 1930, and in that town, grew-up to be the sociable, jovial and righteous person so many loved.
But, inside that “easy-going” self, a very intellectual persona also dwelled; and, that everlasting quest for wisdom geared him to focused his studies towards the Sciences. He moved to Havana after completing High School and received his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Havana. Then, on a trip visiting home from Medical School, he met the “beautiful girl” who will walk hand-in-hand his entire life journey, Maria Cecilia Barrinat. They married in 1961, had three wonderful sons (Jorge, Henry and Mario) and together traversed the rough waters of raising a family and completing his Anesthesiology Residency while surviving the vicisitudes of Cuba’s Political Turmoil.
Because of that, he exiled with his young family to the United States in 1971. They lived in Tennessee for three years and finally settled in Houston to complete his U. S. Medical Training in Anesthesiology.
As such, he successfully practiced at Bellaire and Sharpstown Hospitals where he was a widely respected physician, not only for his superb medical skills, but for the great relationships he had with patients, colleagues and staff.
In his personal life Asterito enjoyed reading, dancing, listening to music and watching Boxing. He liked that sport so much that dedicated his spare time to serve as a “ring-side doctor” for many professional and amateur Boxing Events.
He also loved helping people! And, his privately-kept generosity touched lives here and in Cuba- where some of his siblings’ families remained.
But above all these, his absolute favorite thing was to be a family man-an inseparable husband to his wife “Cecy” for 62 years and a profoundly devout father to his “boys”.
Dr. Alpizar was preceded in death by his parents Asterio and Aurelia; his siblings Osvaldo, Arnaldo and Dora Blanco; and his beloved son Jorge Alpizar.
He is survived, and will be dearly missed, by his wife Maria Cecilia, his sons Dr. Henry and Mario Alpizar (Diana Angel); his sister Mireya-niece Dr. Dora Alicia Glez , nephew Roberto Botell and their families in Houston, as well as his multiple nieces and nephews in Florida; his spiritual daughter Dr. Dunia Haddad (husband Elias and sons); his close friends Elio Leon, Carlos Gonzalez and Luis Verdecia ; and the many other dear friends and families of those already departed.
May Ignacio Asterio’s Memory Be Eternal! May Our Merciful Lord Jesus Christ receive his soul in His Heavenly Kingdom, Amen.
