HUNG P. NGUYEN, age 74, of Houston, Texas passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2022. Hung was born October 7, 1947 to Thin Thi and Thuyen Ma Nguyen in Son Tay, Vietnam. He was the youngest of five siblings and finished high school at Vo Truong Toan in Saigon, Vietnam.
In 1968, Hung received a scholarship to attend Auckland University in New Zealand, where he studied to become an electrical engineer. He returned to Saigon to begin his career where he also taught English in the evenings at the London School, where he met and fell in love with Hien Vy. Both of their families were sponsored to come to the US, and they were fatefully reunited in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they were married in 1975. During their time in Tulsa, Hung worked at Public Service Company of Oklahoma and welcomed their son Alex into the world. In 1978, the family moved down to Houston, Texas, where their family soon grew with the birth of their daughter, Di-An. Hung spent 35 years at Houston Lighting & Power Company until 2013. Starting in 2008, Hung also started working on the side as a reporter at Voice of America, where he reported on local events and activities in the Vietnamese community.
In retirement, Hung and Hien Vy explored the world and traveled to countless countries across all seven continents; he loved sightseeing! As travels halted with the pandemic, he took on hobbies like writing, biking, walking, and gardening. Sadly, his health took a turn for the worse in June 2022. He is survived by Hien Vy, Alex, Di-An, and his two fur-grandbabies – Wallee and Millie. Hung will be forever remembered by many for his kind soul, calming demeanor, and love for his family.
