He was married to Frances Metcalf for 59 years and after her death, to Judy Clark for 5 years until his death.
In his 30-year career, Howard worked for Ford Aerospace - Space Systems Division - as Manager of Software Engineering supporting the Mission Control Center and Earth Resources Divisions of NASA. Prior to that he worked for Philco and Philco Ford.
Howard served in the US Navy, teaching electronics, and was a member of the American Legion. He played championship chess and Bridge and loved ballroom dancing, gardening, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by wife, Judy Clark Johnson ; son David Allen Johnson and daughter Sandra Johnson Kradzinski (Mark); grandchildren, Erik Johnson, Mark C. Kradzinski Jr., Stephen M. Kradzinski (Keri), and Julie Ann Johnson; sisters, Shirley Bleichner and Ellie Tschida.

A funeral service will occur Thursday, May 13, 2021 from 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038. A reception will occur Thursday, May 13, 2021 from 11:45 AM to 1:45 PM, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038. A committal service will occur Thursday, May 13, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038. A burial will occur at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, Texas 77038.
