Hortense Newsome, age 86, passed away peacefully in her sleep in her home on Monday, 18th July. “HOTense”, as she was affectionally known by family, was born on August 31, 1935, to her mother, Bessie Lee Newsome, and her father Elsworth Newsome. Both preceding her in death.
Born one of nine children, Hortense started her education with the Houston Independent School District but was unable to be completed due to the need to help take care of the family. A family that consisted of 4 brothers (the late Elsworth Newsome, Jr; late Isaac Newsome; late Johnny L. Newsome; and late Willie J. Newsome) and 4 sisters (the late Vera Guidry; late Katherine Phillips; late Eula M. Gaines; and Joyce R. Newsome). All her life, even as a caregiver, she gave of herself to help others.
She confessed Christ at a young age under the late Rev. Smith at Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church formerly located in the Heights. Later moving her membership in the early 70’s to St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E. L. Edwards, Sr.
For anyone who knew “HOTense” or got a chance to talk to her, knew she had a passion for family, sports, dogs, and plants. She would give you a history lesson and life lesson all in one conversation. She always gave “tough love” advice that would prepare you for the ugliness of the world. After one conversation with her you knew there was nothing in life she didn’t know or hadn’t experienced. Even with her limited vision she didn’t miss a sports call or play. She was always ahead of who should be hired and fired. Her love for plants and dogs, was as nurturing as a mother to a child. They responded to her with the same unconditional love for all to see.
Besides her sister Joyce, she leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
