Herman Vasquez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away in his home on August 3, 2023, just one month shy of his 95th birthday. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born in 1928, Herman's life was a testament to love, compassion, and unwavering faith. A man with an infectious zest for life, he had the remarkable ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, effortlessly making friends wherever he went. He believed in the power of kindness and sought opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of others. His warm smile and charitable spirit made him a cherished figure within his community.
Herman's unwavering faith in God was a cornerstone of his life. He found solace, guidance, and strength within the pages of the Bible, drawing inspiration from its teachings. His devotion to his faith was evident in his actions, as he treated everyone with love and compassion.
Herman's devotion to his wife, his “Cachetona”, Lupe, was a love story for the ages. She was the center of his universe. They were inseparable, sharing a bond that withstood the test of time. Married for nearly 60 years, their love was a beacon of strength and inspiration. One of the many things that brought them joy was their shared passion for dancing. From dancing their favorite “El Chotis” to “Danzon”, Herman and Lupe danced the nights away showing us that love can be expressed in every era. Herman had a natural gift for making Lupe laugh. Whether it was a silly joke, a comical story, or a gentle teasing, he found countless ways to bring a smile to Lupe's face. Their laughter spread joy to all those around them. Their marriage was a constant reminder of the happiness they found in each other's presence. Their love story was not only a testament to their devotion to each other but also to their incredible children. They both poured their hearts into raising their kids to provide them with a better future. Their love and sacrifices were a true reflection of their dedication and commitment to their family.

Herman's culinary career began in 1947, at the age of 17, where he landed his very first job as a dishwasher at Richie's Restaurant in Harlingen, Texas where Herman's love for cooking was ignited. Driven by his newfound passion, Herman moved to Houston in pursuit of greater opportunities in the culinary world. To his astonishment, he was offered a prestigious position as the Head Chef at the renowned Black Angus restaurant on August 3, 1959. The Black Angus was a well-known restaurant in Houston, known for its exquisite cuisine and frequented by local celebrities. Houston caught a glimpse of Chef Herman, as he became a familiar face on billboards and newspapers, earning acclaim for serving some of the best dishes in town. Herman ensured that every dish that left his kitchen was a masterpiece. Herman's culinary creations were not just a feast for the palate but works of art. Herman's professional journey spanned over three decades. He leaves an incredible mark on the industry inspiring aspiring chefs who sought to emulate his passion for cooking.
Even after his retirement, his love for cooking remained alive, as he delighted his family and friends with his culinary creations. Cooking was not only a profession for Herman but also an expression of his love for his family. His specialty was his famous salsa and spaghetti, a dish that brought the family together around the table, creating lasting memories and happy moments. The aroma of his homemade sauce and the comfort of a warm bowl of pasta became a symbol of his love and care.
Herman embraced a new chapter in his life, dedicated to the simple pleasures that brought him immense joy. He found solace in tending to his farm and garden that mirrored the richness of his spirit. Herman Vasquez was preceded in death by his beloved sons Herman Vasquez Jr. and Robert Salinas, his parents he spoke often of, and by all of his 16 beloved siblings, each of whom played a unique and significant role in his life. He leaves behind his loving wife Guadalupe Vasquez, daughter Mary Torres and husband Jose Cruz Torres, grandchildren, great-grandchild, loving in-laws, extended family, and countless friends whose lives he touched. His love for Lupe, his dedication to his family, his generosity for others, his love for God, and his ability to weave captivating life stories will forever remain in our hearts. While his physical presence may no longer be with us, his spirit will live on in the memories we shared, the lessons he imparted, and the love he bestowed upon us all.
