He was born in La Coste, Texas on May 19, 1930. He was married to Eva Martinez on October 11, 1954. He enlisted in the Army at the age of 16 in 1947 and, in 1948, was deployed to Korea where he served as an infantryman in the United States Army until 1951. He was a member of the American Legion #416 for the past 27 years and served as post commander for one of those years.
He was a devoted husband and father and he took great pride in his family including his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alvino and Maria Martinez, his sisters Andrea Cortez, Concepcion “Chona” Rodriguez, Emilia Gomez and Salome Cortez; his brothers Joe and Conrado Martinez. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eva Martinez; children Sylvia Garcia and her husband, David; Stefanie Fernandez and her husband, Fernando; Carlos Martinez and his wife, Kristi; grandchildren Michelle Stockwell and her husband, Salvador; Jonathan Garcia; Fernando Fernandez and his wife, Nicole; Anessa Fernandez; Riley Elliott, Michael Elliott, Matthew Martinez, Alex Martinez, Devin Ferrell, Nick Ferrell, Avery Ferrell and many great grandchildren nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Bradley Ferrell.
A special thank you to his wonderful caregivers Gladys, Mary and Tammy. They transcended the role of caregiver and developed strong and meaningful relationships with him. The countless hours spent conversing with him was the most meaningful therapy they could have provided.
Visitation will be held between 5:00 and 8:00 and a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 in the Chapel of Pat H. Foley Funeral Home 1200 West 34th Street, Houston, TX 77018. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at St. Ambrose Church, 4213 Mangum Rd., Houston, TX 77092 with Rev. Hieu Nguyen. The Rite of Committal will be at Houston National Cemetery 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr.; Houston, TX 77038.
