Helen Carter Ney Stewart, age 99, passed away peacefully at her home in Houston on the 9th of January 2013. She was born on the 29th of October 1913 to William Winthrop Carter, Jr. and Annette Meyer Carter in New Orleans at her grandparents' home on the corner of Canal and Broad Streets in New Orleans.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, her siblings William Winthrop Carter III and Edith Carter Stewart and her first husband Edward G. Ney. She was also predeceased by her daughter Bonnie Ney Arnold and her stepsons William Robert Stewart and Edward Gilmore Stewart. She is survived by her husband of 39 years Robert Stewart, grandsons Randy, Eddie and Michael Arnold and their father Richard, nephew Kenneth P. Carter and his wife Mary, stepdaughter Stephanie Jamison, her husband Bryan and their children Emily Schmid and husband Bill, Melanie and Lauren, and also Stephen Looke and wife Lindsey and son Bromley, and Joe, Elizabeth and Collins Looke.
Helen moved to Houston in 1924. She graduated from San Jacinto High School and attended Sophie Newcomb College where she pledged Alpha Delta Pi. After her first husband passed away in 1953, she worked as an executive assistant to Wade Beckman at Anderson Clayton and then for Charles Rathbun at Ranger Insurance. She retired in 1974.
Helen had an encyclopedic knowledge of her family history. She would tell many interesting and amusing stories about her Southern ancestors. Her favorite early memories were spending the summers with her family at the Methodist Camp Grounds in Biloxi, Mississippi. Helen also enjoyed reading, playing golf and traveling, especially to Colorado in the summer. She was a member of Houston Country Club.
The family would like to thank Dalisay Campos, Salastri Kazetsky, Christina Gonzalez, Marta Cazares and Syenny Malonda for their devoted care the past three years, and also to Houston Hospice for their service in recent months.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 15th of January, in the chapel of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Martin J. Bastian, Senior Associate Rector for Pastoral Care, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent church parlor.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment service at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
