Helen Marie Nelson

Helen M. Nelson, 93, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014 in Houston, TX. She had been a resident of Holly Hall Assisted Living in Houston for many years. She was born November 17, 1920 in Iola, KS to Byron and Alta Burns. She graduated from Iola High School in 1938 and attended Iola Junior College. She worked for Fees & Hoyt Oil Company in Iola before working for British American Oil in Tulsa, OK. Helen married Ellis Nelson upon his return from World War II on March 6, 1945.

In her earlier years Helen loved her closest friendship to her neighborhood NNN Group, otherwise known as the “Nine Nutty Nuts”. Her other passion was to quilt and giving her beautiful finished work to her children and grandchildren. She was active in many church life activities throughout her youth and adult life and was a long time member of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Houston.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis, January 1, 2002. She is survived by her children, Bryan Nelson and wife Cathy, Robert Nelson and wife Rhonda, Wendell Nelson and wife Linda, Lori (Nelson) Williams and her husband Bill. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a loving Aunt and sister-in-law to her extended Nelson Swedish family. She will be missed by all who loved her.
