Helen was baptized September 30, 1917 at St. John Lutheran Church in Wharton. She had a long and eventful life, having served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Helen then met and married the love of her life, James H. McGee, Jr., June 27, 1950. Helen and James joined Our Savior Lutheran Church in 1952 after convincing her Baptist boy to become a Lutheran! She managed to also convince her in-laws to join Our Savior! Both James and Helen were faithful members until his death in 1977. Helen remained active in her church, never missing a Sunday or Pastor’s Bible Study, until her declining health dictated otherwise. She was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Young at Heart. Helen served as the Treasurer of both for many years.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Herman Matthys in 2007. She is survived by her siblings, Irene Matthys of Houston, Alma Matthys of Wharton, Lother Matthys of Copperas Cove, and Richard Matthys (LaVita) of Lawton, OK; nieces and nephew, Debbie Doan, Terri Fisher, and Rick Matthys; as well as many friends whose love became very evident during her last illness. All of her survivors can rejoice because she is now walking around in Heaven. To WALK again was her greatest desire and prayer, which was answered as Jesus took her hand and walked with her in to Heaven’s Gates late Friday evening.
Visitation will be held Monday, August 22, 2016, from 5-8 PM at Heights Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held the following morning at Our Savior Lutheran Church at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make a contribution to Our Savior Lutheran Church, or to their favorite charity.
Arrangements under the direction of Heights Funeral Home, Houston, TX.
