Helen was born August 16, 1936, in Conroe, Texas, to Earl and Hazel Pitts. Following her graduation from Conroe High School in 1954, she worked numerous jobs—the longest with ADT Security Systems, from which she retired in 1998. She met the love of her life, Delbert Lunsford, at Atlas Trucking where she was doing temporary work. She poured her heart and soul into her family. Her children remember how she loved cooking and would insist on doing their laundry when they came to visit. Most of all, they’ll remember how supportive she was of their endeavors.
Helen lived a full and happy life. She was an active member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Tomball and served as Treasurer of the Women Active for Christ for many years. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and was always ready to teach anyone a new card game. Her favorite pastime was spending time with family and grandchildren, whom she loved with all her heart. She made it a point to celebrate those she loved and did everything she could to attend birthdays, graduations, and other special events. Friends describe Helen as a kind and beautiful woman—inside and out—with a sweet smile, easy laugh, and quick wit. She was very fashion conscious and always looked like she stepped out of a magazine. Helen was so fun to be around; she always had a story to tell and loved to make people laugh. She’d even laugh at herself when she would use the wrong word: “I better open this garage door before we get sophisticated.” She will be remembered not only as a gracious hostess but as the life of the party.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Lunsford, and her brothers, Carl Pitts (Ernestine, who was also her best friend from childhood) and Robert Pitts (Ginger). Helen is survived by her children Tommy Phillips (Charles Ryburn) of San Antonio, John Earl Phillips (Rena) of Conroe, and Kelli Nevlud (Phillip) of Houston; Stepchildren Steve Deville, Brady Deville, and Pat Rachal (Calvin) of Louisiana; Grandchildren Preston (Rachel), Natalie, Shanna, Dina, and numerous great grandchildren; Nephew Carl Pitts and nieces Cindy Sullivan and Donna Duree. Her precious fur-baby Lily was a big part of her life. She was also considered a second mom, Grandma, or Grandma Helen to many. She will be dearly missed by all.
The daily devotional verse for the day of Helen’s passing couldn’t have been more appropriate: “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.” Psalm 3:3-4
