My parents were excellent supporters of and very active in the Lions Club. My late father, Clifford Allen Burke, joined the Lions Club while we lived in Laredo in the 50s. In 1988, my mother was the first woman to join the Lions Club in Texas when the rules changed to admit both men and women into the same club. Before that date, women had their own Club separate from the men.
Together my parents formed over five clubs in the Houston Area, along with the Houston Leos Club for high school students. Other Lions activities my parents were involved in were Leader Dogs for the Blind, The Texas Lions Children's Camp in Kerrville, Texas which includes summer programs for children with mental and physical disabilities, the annual golf tournament, and annual summer hot dog eating contest which also included hula hoop and watermelon contests for children. All entry fees went toward Lions Club charity projects, such as food drives, adoption of families in need during the Christmas holidays, and eyeglasses for children and adults in need. In addition to the Lions Club, my mother loved my father, chocolate, and cats.
My mother was preceded in death by my sister Candace Kathryn and my father Cliff. She is survived by daughters Marilyn Burke, Suzette Chapman, son Jeffrey Burke; grandchildren: Christian Dominguez-Burke and wife Roxana, Alan Burke and wife Lizzy, Karen Burke, Kayla Burke; and her great grandchildren: Julia Burke-Sexton, Kennia, Stephanie, Anthony and Noah Dominguez.
Mom will be privately laid to rest beside my dad and sister at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi, Texas.
For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made in my mother's memory to Corridor Rescue Spay and Neuter program for cats.
