Hazel grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida, the middle of three children of Holman and Lucy Cox. She and her sister, June, loved digging up clams on the beach and having her feet in the bright white sands. At 17 she went off to Emory University and studied Nursing. Once she graduated she went to work for the Public Health Service as a Registered Nurse.
That work finally brought her to Galveston and then to Houston, where she met her husband and true love, Wesley Wallace. They married in 1956 and planted roots in the new suburb of Spring Branch, where they lived the rest of their lives. They raised three children, Scott, Drusilla, and Casey.
She and Wes were married at Chapelwood United Methodist Church and raised their family there. Hazel was a member there to the end, watching the live stream of the services faithfully each Sunday morning. She was also a supporter of the Chapelwood Foundation.
She was a proud stay-at-home mom and was very active in all of her kid's activities. She was a room mom, a PTA member, a Cub Scout leader, a Camp Fire Girls Advisor, and every other thing she could volunteer for. She loved playing tennis when the kids were young. Later that was replaced by world travel and cruises with her husband upon his retirement. And she loved raising and tending her orchids.
Just when she thought her life couldn't get any better, she was blessed with four grandchildren. And there she was, involved with them, going to their games, events, birthday parties and graduations. She was always there for them and they were her pride and joy. And just when she thought her life couldn't get any better than THAT . . . she was blessed with four Great-Grandchildren! And they became a new joy of her life. It delighted her each time they came over and would say "Gigi!"
In addition to being a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, she also belonged to the Spring Branch Bridge Club, and the West Houston Literary Society.
The family would like to give special thanks to her caregivers who so wonderfully helpful and truly caring: Bridgett, Marilyn, Griselda, Sheila, Yvonne, Louise, and also Gayle, her hospice nurse along with the entire Memorial Hermann Hospice staff. Also to Hazel's neighbors who were always there for her.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Wes, and her eldest son Scott. She is survived by her sister June Ellis, her daughter Dru Bennett and her husband Steve, and her son Casey Wallace and his wife Stacey; her four grandchildren, Adam Gomez and wife Caitlyn, Ian Gomez and wife Katie, Cameron Chavez, and Scott Wallace; her four great grandchildren Elizabeth, Addison, Wesley and Scottie Gomez.
Hazel's funeral will be held at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, in the Chapel, at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 8, 2023. The funeral home handling the arrangements is Memorial Oaks. There will be a reception following the service and everyone is welcome.
