Sis. Hattie Washington Walker was born on July 3, 1922 in Waterproof, Louisiana to Garfield Washington and Laura Gardner and raised by her step-father Madison McGriffin. She was the 2nd child of three and the only girl whom they nicknamed “Sweet Peaches”.
Hattie’s education began in Waterproof, Louisiana, in a small church named Greenville Baptist Church. As a young lady in 1949, she moved to Houston, Texas and lived in the 3rd ward area, where she met and married the love of her life. She united in Holy Matrimony to the late Pastor Green Walker Sr. for 61 years. To this union, no children were born; however, she was a mother to his two sons, Charles Walker and Green Walker Jr., who precedes her in death. In 1955, they relocated to the Acres Home Community and resided there until her death.
In 1958, Hattie Walker was led by the Holy Spirit to join her husband, the late Pastor Green Walker Sr., at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. He was a devoted member under the late Pastor M.C. Williams. Hattie Walker obeyed the Holy Spirit and joined Antioch and was baptized under the leadership of Pastor F. N. Williams Sr., where she served faithfully. During their membership, her husband accepted God’s call to preach the Word of God. In 1963, Rev. Green Walker Sr. was called to Pastor New Hope M.B.C., 4827 Creekmont Dr. in Houston, Texas, where she was a devoted and proud Pastor’s wife for 46 years, until God called him from “Labor to Reward”, on July 28, 2010. Sis. Walker remained a loyal member as New Hope M.B.C., transitioned under the leadership of Rev. Alonzo Tinker Jr., the newly elect Pastor of New
Hope Missionary Baptist Church in “2012” until her death.
Sis. Walker was a member of the Combined Choir, Mission Chorus, Mission Society, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years.
Sis. Walker enjoyed shopping at the Mall and her favorite Boutiques. She enjoyed traveling with her sister-in-law, Gladys Washington and daughter-in-law, Claudette Walker and goddaughter, Drusilla Bean, (the designated driver) to her hometown, of Waterproof, Louisiana, and other surrounding cities and States and made sure to locate the nearest “Dillard’s”.
Sis. Walker was a collector of dolls and black figurines. She had all kinds of dolls, but she had her favorites, so she named them Green Jr., Tommie and Dora.
She loved cooking, which was shown as she prepared meals for the gathering of her family, church members and friends, who came to enjoy it. Through the years, the Walkers enjoyed the company of their close friends, who rotated Friday night dinners. The Walkers invited families, such as the Redmon’s, Williams’, Robinson’s, Allens’, Creeks’ and Prestons’, over for a Fish Fry and Apple/Raisin salad or dinner with smothered chicken, ox tails, rice, cabbage, yams, blackeye peas, okra and tomatoes and cornbread. In addition, for many years, Sis. Walker had prepared a feast for family members and her extended New Hope family, who came to the Walkers’ home for Christmas luncheon. On Christmas Eve, she cooked most of the night, so that people would enjoy some of “Hattie’s Family Favorites”, such as Cornbread dressing, Baked Ham, Baked Apples, Lime Jello Salad and her famous homemade Chocolate and Jelly
Cakes. The last of this tradition ended in December “2009”.
Sis. Walker was a woman of class and elegance, with a warm personality, radiant smile and a style that may have been imitated, but never duplicated. She had etiquette that exemplified a woman of God and a Minister’s wife.
She was kind hearted, loving, God fearing and a Prayer Warrior. During her lifetime, she was a life coach
who shared her wisdom with others.
At the age of 101, Sis. Walker passed away peacefully in her home under Hospice Care, on April 16, 2024 with Charles near her side.
Sis. Walker retired from the Houston Independent School District after 35 years of dedicated service.
Sis. Walker was preceded in death by her husband, the late Pastor Green Walker, her parents, Garfield Washington, Laura and Madison Mc Griffin, her step son Green Walker Jr.; two brothers, Garfield Washington and Julius Mc Griffin. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Charles Walker; sister-in-law, Annie L.
