Major Harry William “Bill” Johnson was born in Longview, TX January 10, 1925 to Harry T. Johnson and Anna T. Johnson. A graduate of LaPorte High school and the University of Houston, Bill served in WWII in 8th Air Force and the Korean War.
Shortly after graduating, he met the love of his life, Winifred C. Cox, daughter of Col. Demmie H. Cox and Winifred C. Cox. They were married at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Houston on February 10, 1951 with his sisters Ala Fay Miller and Mary Jane Fuqua as bridesmaids who have preceded him in death.
While serving his country overseas in London, England, Bill witnessed the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Joining the US Air Force reserves as a Major in 1970, Bill began his professional career as a project engineer for Texas Gulf Construction Company, working on the southbound Galveston Causeway Bridge and other projects.
In 1976, Bill founded his own construction company in Houston, TX Harry W. Johnson and Associates, Inc. His projects included highway work, Ellington Air Force Base and Intercontinental Airport, multiple housing subdivisions in the region, and a dam across the Colorado River. His final project prior to retirement was the 610 approach to the Houston Ship Channel Bridge.
In 1981, Bill and his family relocated to Austin, TX where he enjoyed retirement with his wife, six children, 11 grand children and 3 great-grand children.
On August 1, 2012, Bill, 87, passed into the arms of his beloved Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his adoring wife of 61 and a half years, Winifred; his daughter Teri and husband Tom Sapp, daughter Julie and husband Steve Van Winkle, daughter Linda Johnson, Joel and wife Patricia Baxter-Johnson, son Jerald Johnson, and daughter Joanie Johnson; his grandchildren Brian Johnson, Stephanie Allen, Priscilla Bearden, Timothy Van Winkle, Shelby Sapp, Kelsey Sapp, Billy Acree, Wesley Acree, Daniel Acree, Scott Acree, and Joel Johnson; and his great-grandchildren, Haden, Sheridan, and Marisa Johnson; his nieces Fay Ann Mae, Felice Aboud, and Jenny Johns. He also leaves behind his beloved Boston Terrier, George. He will be greatly missed by so many. We love you Dad, Papa, love of Mom’s life! Services will be held in Houston, Texas at Forest Park Lawndale, Friday, August 10th at 2pm.
