to Moses and Helen Draughn in Frierson, Louisiana. She
accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at New
Friendship Baptist Church in Louisiana. Gussie graduated
in 1963 from Second Ward School in Gloster.
On November 24, 1969, she married Robert Charles
Jones, and shortly thereafter, they relocated to Houston,
Texas. Their union was blessed with two sons, Leon Sr.,
and Lester.
Gussie dedicated 25 years to the Harris County School
District as a Food Services Manager, ensuring that
students received nutritious meals throughout the school
year. She retired in 2001.
On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, Gussie was called home to
be with the Lord our Savior.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Moses, and
Helen Draughn; five brothers, Albert Draughn, Leon
Draughn, Willie Copeland, Jerome Draughn, and Clyde
Draughn; one sister, Julia Lee Bryant; and one sister-in-law,
Lucy Draughn.
Gussie leaves behind a loving family to cherish her
memory, her husband of 54 years, Robert Charles
Jones; her two sons, Leon W. Jones, Sr. (Darlene) and
Lester W. Jones (Amanda), both of Houston; her three
grandchildren, Leon W. Jones, Jr., Robert W. Jones, and
Donovan I. A. Gibson all of Houston; and her three great-
grandchildren, Jacori’ Jones, Kaliah Johnson, and Kalyah
Jones. She is also survived by her two brothers, George
Ray Draughn of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Hardwell
Draughn of Frierson, Louisiana; three sisters-in-law, Diane
Draughn, Edna Lewis, and Carrie Mae Draughn; and a host
of nieces, nephews and dear friends.
