Guillermo Jose Flores, age 89, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2023, peacefully in his sleep. Guillermo was born in Managua, Nicaragua, on July 4th, 1933. He was the son of David Agustin Flores, of Chontales, Nicaragua and Maria Rosa Collado, of Chontales, Nicaragua. Guillermo was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, David Flores and Ricardo Flores.
Guillermo retired after 35 years in the Financial World. He held several positions in the Banking Industry; during his tenure, at the Banco Nacional, he had the position of General Manager of several of its branches in different departments across the country. He also held the General Manager position at Bank of America. He was the Planner, Organizer and General Manager of Financiera Industrial Agropecuaria (FIA): an entity created to sustain the agricultural sector by facilitating capital for saving and borrowing. His knowledge and command of the banking and financial field also took him to take managerial positions at Cerveceria Victoria- Nicaragua’s leading brewery company; Supermercados Mas Por Menos-Managua’s largest supermarket; Sorbetes Eskimo-Nicaragua’s trademark ice cream company. After he relocated to Los Angeles, California, he held the position of Accountant at Wells Fargo Bank.
Guillermo’s knowledge and command of the financial market started at a vey young age; he started taking classes for Accounting and Finances at a local trades college, then took courses in Colombia and New York. He attended a year at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City and a year at the Instituto Tecnologico in Monterrey, Mexico. He never lost his thirst for knowledge; he was an avid reader and could converse on any topic. He instilled this inquisitiveness to all his children and grandchildren.
He loved music. His favorite song was “El Rey” by Vicente Fernandez. He always quoted Frank Sinatra’s “I Did It My Way”, when asked about how to qualify his life. He had a great sense of humor and loved comedy. He was a loyal friend, maintaining contact with his childhood friends whenever possible; he was also a family man always ready to procure for his children to best of his ability. His wisdom, care and good times will be missed.
He is survived by his four children. Gretchen Works, Guillermo Flores (Lorena), Erwin Flores (Ingrid) and Liz Strunk (Scott); his sister Norma Isabel de Paz; his four younger brothers, Eddie Flores, Oscar Flores, Mario Flores, and Paul Flores; and his grandchildren, Ryan Strunk, Jason Strunk (Crystal), Marlon Murillo, Melissa Flores (Diego), Erwin Jose Flores, and Lucas Flores.
