Our precious mother, Guadalupe Diane Huizar Guzman, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2021. She was 83 years old. She is survived by seven of her children; Shari Moreno, Lawrence Valdez and wife Stacie, Alice Giles and husband Ulises, Marysol Fritz and husband Jim, Mia Cevallos, Kammy Cevallos and husband Chris Perez, and Marcial Cevallos and wife Crystal. She was preceded in death by her loving son; David Valdez-Barcelo. She leaves behind 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Diane was born to Guadalupe Pullman and Santos Huizar on December 11, 1937 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She had six siblings; Junior, Bobby, Janette, Sylvia, Barbara and her baby sister who was her dearest best friend; Geraldine “Gerry”. After graduating high school, she went on to teach dancing.
She later worked for Powell Manufacturing Company as an electrical wireman. This position was rare for women during this time and she took so much pride in this accomplishment.
Diane was the epitome of resilience and perseverance. She did the best she could to raise her eight children. As a single parent, she worked tirelessly to provide for them, often relying on her oldest children to help with the younger ones in order to maintain balance in the household. Throughout her hardships, she still found the tenacity to open two carpet businesses as well as a video game room in Hitchcock, Texas. Her ambition was bar none. Diane loved selling carpet. Her skills and passion for selling carpet would earn her several awards during her tenure at Carpet Giant.
She loved cooking, gardening, reading books to the children in her neighborhood, visiting with her children and grandchildren, watching Judge Judy, CNN, and prayed daily to La Virgen de Guadalupe. She was a wealth of knowledge, an advisor to her children and known to “tell it like it is”. Her sense of humor and infectious laughter will always be remembered. She will be deeply missed by her children, family and all who knew her.
Visitation will be Monday, January 18, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with funeral services from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023. Burial will follow at Forest Park Lawndale from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
