Grace Eloise (Tomlin) Cherry, 92, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 in Houston, Texas. She was born July 20, 1918 in Houston, a daughter of Morrell Tomlin and Grace (Kimler) Tomlin. After graduating from Reagan High School, Grace attended the University of Houston part-time while working for Southern Pacific Railroad. She married Clyde Cherry in 1936.
During WWII, Grace worked for IBM Corporation and volunteered with the Red Cross, where she drove a van transporting wounded soldiers between Houston and San Antonio. After WWII, Clyde resumed his career with George A. Hormel & Co. Over the next 31 years, Grace and Clyde raised a family, relocated many times, and made new friends around the country. Upon his retirement from the Hormel Co. in 1976, they returned home to Houston.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, her son Craig, and her sisters Helen Booker, Vieva Thompson, and Virginia Woodrum. She is survived by her daughter Carol and son-in-law Alex Toles of Connecticut, three grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 PM on Saturday, December 18, 2010 in the Chapel at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society 1-800-227-2345.
