Glenn Freeman Miller, 88, of Cypress, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, with his wife at his side. He was born August 2, 1930, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, to Carroll and Bertie Beatrice (Freeman) Miller.
Glenn graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1952 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. His 60-year career in the oil and gas industry took him all over the world and included executive tenures in South America and Russia. In 1958, while at Phillips Petroleum, he was admitted to the “Four Mile Club” for overseeing the drilling of a 25,340-ft. deep well in Pecos County, TX, which was at that time the world’s deepest well. He also escorted then-President Gerald Ford on a tour of a semi-submersible drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico while Executive Vice President of Diamond M Drilling. One accolade he was most proud of came in 1998, when he was the first American in Russia’s history to receive a medal from the Russian government for what is translated as “Honored Oilman of Russia,” awarded for his contributions to the industry.
Glenn was admired by many for being down-to-earth and never forgetting his humble beginnings. He was a proud and patriotic American and that sentiment never wavered. He was a model family patriarch, serving as a rock to his family and he never failed to help those he loved when they were in need.
After his retirement at age 82, he actively followed the news and world events along with his beloved Texas Longhorns. He also enjoyed walks with and the company of his little dachshund, Cody, who was dutifully by his side during his illness. But most of all he treasured his wife, Ludmila, to whom he was deeply devoted. Glenn was loved by many.
He is survived by his wife, Ludmila Miller; daughters Nancy Miller; Glenda Wetmore and husband, Bob; Julie Chipman and husband, Les; son, Gary Miller and wife, Patti; step-son, Serge Agafonov; grandchildren, Avigail Miller; Esther Miller; Tikva Miller; Katy Lowe and husband, Adam; Brittany Wetmore; Jonathan Chipman; Jessica Jones and husband, Sterling; Jennifer Sugg and husband, Taylor; Ben Miller; Noah Miller; Grace Miller; and Rosemary Agafonov. He is also survived by his two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Chipman II and Olivia Sugg. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers and two sisters.
Serving as pallbearers will be his stepson, Serge Agafonov; grandsons, Jonathan Chipman and Benjamin Miller; and grandsons-in-law, Sterling Jones, Taylor Sugg, and Adam Lowe. Honorary pallbearers will be his close friends, Rich MacDougal and Carlos Kenda.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 31st from 6-8pm at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home & Cemetery 13102 North Freeway, Houston, TX and again from 12:00-2:00 on Saturday, June 1st. Services will immediately follow Saturday’s visitation.
