Mrs. Gladys L. Thompson passed from this life into eternity on Thursday, February 12, 2015, at 91 years of age. Gladys was born May 8, 1923, in Spring Hill, Louisiana, to parents William Allen Litton and Irene (Horne) Litton. After a sweet courtship, she married Rev. Clyde H. Thompson on May 10, 1942.
The stories of how Gladys touched so many lives are endless. A woman of strong faith, she demonstrated the love of Christ for many years by directing Vacation Bible School and loving the children that attended. She was always supportive of her husband’s Christian ministry and led several Sunday School Classes, and was often the organist or pianist in the churches where he was pastor. She was a modest, kind, honest, and loving woman who often was found cooking in the kitchen. Even in later years of life, after she lost her vision, she could still make the most wonderful cornbread from scratch. She would mix the batter by feel, and not measure one ingredient. There are cookbooks where she wrote “tried and true” on several of the family’s favorite recipes. Her many kind words and loving acts were a wonderful example for everyone who came into contact with her. She was a woman of distinction, and she carried herself with dignity and respect for all.
Gladys was preceded in death by: her husband of 72 years, Rev. Clyde H. Thompson; her parents; son, John L. Thompson; and grandson, Steven Thompson. She is survived by her daughter, Sharron Young; son, Allen Thompson and wife Janet; grandchildren: Sheri Walker and husband Gordon, John L. Gordon and wife Marlo, Tim Gordon and wife Lori, Carroll Thompson, Blake Thompson and wife Kristi, Scott Thompson and wife Tanya; 13 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
Visitation is scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 5-8pm. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00pm Monday, February 16, 2015 at Forest Park Lawndale Chapel with David Garrett officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. In lieu of the usual remembrances, a memorial donation may be made to First Baptist Church Lomax, 11303 N. H Street, La Porte, TX 77571.
