George Washington Wright

George Washington Wright, age 96, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2013 in Houston, Texas. He was born in Ennis, Texas on July 31, 1917 to Ephraim Abbott Wright and Fannie (Moon) Wright. George was the 5th child of eight children.

He married Grace Evelyn Miller on April 24, 1939 in Houston and together they shared 74 years of marriage. George served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from July 1934 till September 1935 working with park construction and assisting with patients in the hospital. He then went on to honorably serve in the state of New Mexico in the National Guard from 1936 till July 1937. He then honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1945 till 1946 till the end of World War II. While in the Army, he worked as a Medical Technician assisting medical officers in the care and treatment of the sick at a prisoner of war camp for German soldiers. George was stationed in Illinois and California while in the Army. After his honorable discharge from the Army, George worked around Texas in various carpentry jobs.

George and Grace loved to travel and visited most the United States and also several countries overseas and in South America. George and Grace loved taking their grandchildren to both Big Bend National Park and Garner State Park in Texas.

George became a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in November 1964. He attended Central Seventh-day Adventist Church in Houston until Grace and George became charter members of the North Houston Seventh-day Adventist Church. George served as a deacon, elder, and head elder while at North Houston and also taught the adult Sabbath school class. As a young man, George encouraged and assisted the youth of the church in many outdoor activities.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Grace Wright and also two sons; George Donald & Esther Wright of Beeville, Texas, and Larry & Glenna Wright of Cleburne, Texas. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren; Gina (Wright) Langley & her husband Chad, Shawn B. Wright, Bonnie Shabay, Ray Wright, Shane Wright, Mickey Wright, Jonathan Wright & his wife Christin, Janelle (Wright) Farran & her husband Eric. George is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren: Amanda, Rebecca, and Danylle Langley; Jonathon, Destany, Mallarie, and Jacob Wright; Donelle and Taylor Faran; and L. Grace Wright. He is also survived by his sister, Tommy Lee Cavender and his niece, Jean Brown. George was preceded in death by one grandson, Donelle Wright.

Viewing will be held at North Houston SDA Church on September 6, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. A Memorial will follow at 10:00 a.m. Graveside services with full military honors will follow at Houston National Cemetery.
