George Julius Nichols was born in Nacogdoches, Texas to George Amos and Jesse Mae (Moore) Nichols on May 9, 1935, and died in Houston, Texas on November 24, 2020.
George was raised in Galena Park and attended public schools, before ultimately graduating from Galena Park High School in 1953. He was a proud member of the Yellowjacket football, baseball, and track teams, as well as the school band and school newspaper.
George attended the University of Houston from 1953-1956. While there, he was a charter member of Alpha Epsilon Delta national pre-medical honor society and earned enough credits to gain early admittance to The University of Texas Dental School in Houston. He graduated from dental school in 1960, and practiced dentistry in Houston for the next 45 years. George was a life member of the American and Texas Dental Associations, the Harris County Dental Society, and Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity. He was a frequent presenter at Houston-area and Texas state dental meetings throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1985, he received a “Goodfellow Award” from the Texas Dental Association.
Throughout his life, George was a member of Galena Park UMC, St. Stephen’s UMC (where he served on the Church Council and the Finance Committee), and Chapelwood UMC. He was extremely proud to have completed the seven-year course provided by Bible Study Fellowship International.
In 1955, George married Linda Elizabeth Ingram. Following George’s graduation from dental school in 1960, they moved to Oak Forest, where George established his successful dental practice. In 1968, George and his family moved to Bunker Hill Village. While there, George coached girls’ softball and boys’ football and baseball in SBMSA and at Chapelwood UMC. During this period, George also became an avid golfer and joined April Sound C.C. in Conroe, Texas.
George is survived by his three children – Sheri Elizabeth Skinner and her husband Robert; Sharon Lyn Nichols Gregory and her husband Raymond; and George Shon Nichols and his wife Elizabeth. In George’s own words, Sheri “was a beautiful little angel” of whom George “became very proud as she grew up”; Sharon was his “sunshine, who could make him smile”; and Shon “gave him more thrills as a son than any father deserved.”
“Doc” is also survived by his seven grandsons, all of whom made him extremely proud and all of whom were “fantastic” in his eyes – Matthew Robert Baughman and his wife Julie; Christopher Alan Baughman and his wife Ashley; Raymond Leslie “Trey” Gregory III and his wife Morgan; Travis Nichols Gregory; George Austin Peterman Nichols; Collin Price Nichols; and Stephen Blake Gregory – and his great-grandson Hunter Graham Baughman. Of all of the many accomplishments of his grandsons, “Doc” would tell you that he was most proud that they were all Christians and were all Confirmed in their faith at Chapelwood UMC. In his later years, George became a well-known fixture at his grandsons’ many sporting events in SBMSA and for the S.B.I.S.D. schools.
A celebration of George’s life was held on November 30, 2020.
