George Rogers Fluke, loving husband and devoted father, passed away on September 11, 2021, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 88. He was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma, on June 24, 1933, the only child of Louise Funk Fluke and George Francis Fluke. George graduated from Ponca City High School in 1951 and the University of Oklahoma in 1954 with a degree in geology. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. While at the University of Oklahoma, he met the love of his life, Virginia Lee Fergus, whom he married in 1957. Upon graduation, he served briefly with the Army Reserve before beginning his career as a geologist with Continental Oil Company. He remained with Conoco his entire career until retiring in 1992.
In 1958, George and Virginia relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, where they had three sons: Robert (Bob), Steven (Steve), and Lawrence (Larry). In 1967, they again relocated to Houston, Texas, which remained home from that point on. George and Virginia were long time members of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston.
Throughout his life, George had a passion for sports. He played basketball competitively in his youth and played tennis recreationally. He also coached his sons’ youth basketball and baseball teams. When he wasn’t playing or coaching, he could be found rooting for anything involving his Oklahoma Sooners. George enjoyed working around the house and yard and supporting many organizations such as American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Houston Geological Society, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Rice Design Alliance, and Venturers, a social group at church. George and Virginia loved to travel together, and they visited many places worldwide. Above all, they enjoyed visiting their children and grandchild here in the States.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Louise Funk and George Francis Fluke. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his three sons and their wives - Bob and Beverly, Steve and Lise, and Larry and Lisa; and his granddaughter Hayden, all of whom will miss him dearly.
A memorial service to celebrate George’s life will be at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024 on October 8, 2021, at 11:00 a.m.
