George Wesley Brock of Houston, Texas went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at the age of 88. He was born near Slaton, TX on January 7, 1928, to Elizabeth Bell (Baskin) and Wesley Allen Brock.
He was one of seven motherless children reared by a single father and a bachelor uncle. He always loved chicken and dumplings, so he was called “chick” as a kid. He also had the nickname “runner” because he would always run for the doctor and run to the store.
George grew up in West Texas for all his school years in Levelland. He was small, but tough, and never backed off from a challenge. He wanted to go into the Navy in World War II, so he filled up on milk and bananas to meet the weight requirement. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman First Class in 1945-46.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters, Eudora Brock Brunson, Thelma “Judy” Oliphant, and Johnnie Whitfield, and brother William M. Brock. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carolyn, son, Richard A. Brock, daughters, Cindy and husband Randy Burchfield, Nancy Brock; granddaughter Mandy and husband Kyle Gammenthaler, and precious great-grandson, Grant. George is also survived by two sisters, Alta Brock Craft (Roy) and Aline Brock, many nephews, nieces and countless friends.
His career included forty –two years of working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. After retirement in 1989, he worked for SCI and as a Wal-Mart greeter. He spent many hours as a volunteer as a Cub Scoutmaster-Pack 335 and as a master gardener with the Harris County Extension Office. A member of Second Baptist Church, he served the Lord as a Deacon, a greeter, a prayer room servant, a faithful volunteer and a member of the Ticket to Heaven Bible study class.
The Celebration of Life service is to be conducted at 1:00 PM on Friday, April 1, 2016, in the Hankamer Chapel at Second Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. The Family graveside service is to be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 10:00 am at Earthman-Resthaven Cemetery.
