Freddie Mays was born to the union of Bennie and Laura Mays on October 23, 1942, in Brenham, Texas. He was of one of six children. He departed this life on Monday, May 4, 2015 at Doctors Hospital. As a youngster, he excelled at swimming, diving, and football. He was a success at any sport he undertook and gave conclusive proof of this with his love for swimming. He took on the nickname of "Frog" because of his strong breast stroke. Freddie's success could be attributed to his power of concentration and diligence. Freddie Mays became a symbol of courage and positivity after he was paralyzed during a 1961 high school practice. Despite the life-altering severity of his injury, Freddie loved sports; all he would watch on television was ESPN - Sports News. Though he endured his share of pain, some who knew him said they never failed to come away inspired by his spirit. His handicap never hindered his independence. This was evident when he went on to attend college at St. Mary University, in San Antonio, Texas. He received a Bachelor Degree in Psychology. Freddie had an eternal and faithful passion to Christ, his savior. Those who knew Freddie will remember his devotion to Christ. Others may remember Freddie as a devoted Christian leader, minister, educator and counselor. Many would come to Freddie for his Christian knowledge. He loved reading books on a wide variety of topics; he especially enjoyed reading books about religion. Freddie exhibited a selfless, caring and giving heart. He was always willing to help anyone in need and was his happiest when sharing God's deep love and spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers (J.D, J.C, and Raymond Mays). He leaves to cherish his memory one brother: Augustus Mays (Joan), one sister: Mary Solomon, and two sister in-laws: Willie Mae Mays and Shartarii Mays and a hosts of nieces, nephews and cousins.
