Fred E. Spence, Jr. R.Ph. age 88, joined his wife, Lynn, and his eldest son Robert, in eternal rest on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Born to Grace Wheat Spence and Fred E. Spence in April 1934 in Dallas, he graduated from Henderson County Junior College and the University of Houston College of Pharmacy.
He spent much of his 50-year career building The Post Oak Pharmacy, with his wife Lynn, into Texas’ largest. Proud to have helped raise several generations over milkshakes, burgers and his ever-present smile, Fred gave back to the community via the Harris County Drug Abuse Task Force, UH pharmacy alumni, and service on several County Grand Juries, all while mentoring countless pharmacy students.
In retirement, he taught friends gardening tips and was elected resident leader of his retirement home. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, “grand-daddy”, uncle, friend, mentor, neighborhood druggist, and lifelong Houston Coog! Fred is survived by his two sisters, Nancy Walding and Linda Wakefield; his four surviving children: Charlotte James, Tom, Tim and Richard Spence; their spouses and his eleven grandchildren. The Spences sincerely thank the Parkway Place staff for years of stellar care. Our celebration of Fred’s life will be held on February 5, 2023 at 1:00pm at Houston Memorial Oaks Cemetery Chapel with visitation immediately afterward.
