Francisca Leonor Reyes Acosta, 92, of Houston, passed away peacefully, with her family at her bedside, on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the Memorial City Health & Rehab Center. Francisca was born January 29th, 1925 to proud parents Jose Maria Acosta and Mariana Miranda in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Better known to family and friends as Nona, she was an only child.
Nona married Miguel Reyes in 1950. She had two daughters, Sonia Blankenship of Houston and Zayda Walsh of Bartlesville. The family immigrated to the United States in 1970 and settled in Houston, Texas.
A consummate mother and homemaker, Nona enjoyed preparing meals for her family. Her signature rice and shrimp dish “Enchilados de Camarones” was eagerly anticipated by all at family gatherings. Nona worked for many years as a Bridal Seamstress at the Neiman Marcus, Galleria.
For 25 years Nona and Miguel would go to vacation in Miami Beach, Florida for a month during the summer to take in the music, the food and the friendships they made from around the world. She enjoyed the ocean, sand and Florida sunshine.
Her passion was her family, her daughters and four grandchildren. Nona was preceded in death by her grandson John Michael Siggins and her parents. Leaving behind husband Miguel, daughters Sonia Blankenship and husband Randall; Zayda Walsh and husband Donald; grandchildren Scott Thomas Siggins and wife Briana, Christine Walsh King and husband Brice and Donald Klein Walsh III and wife Julie.
The five great-grandchildren, Tatum Gray, John Michael and Nolan James Siggins and William Donald and Bennett Dean Walsh will certainly miss their great-grandmother, Nona.
She lived a full, well lived life and she will be missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
Nona requested a small private funeral. The family wishes to thank all those at the Memorial City Health & Rehab Center who cared for her during her last few months.
