Frances Mooney Seger, 96, born August 13, 1916, died peacefully at home on February 28, 2013 with her family by her side. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Henry V. Seger, and eldest daughter Mary Frances Seger.
Fran was born in San Antonio Texas, the cherished only child of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Mooney. She attended boarding school at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. She graduated from our Lady of the Lake University with a degree in English Literature and was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges. She had a lifelong appreciation of the arts, was an avid reader and a lover of poetry.
Fran was an elementary school teacher in Laredo, Texas where she met her husband, Hank. After their marriage in 1938, they eventually made their way to Houston. They were among the first parishioners of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where they were active members of the parish community for over 55 years. Fran served as president of The Charity Guild of Catholic Women, the San Jose Clinic Board of Directors, The Newman Circle and the Teresians of America. She also served as president of the St. Agnes Academy Mother’s Club and the Strake Jesuit Mother’s Club. She chaired numerous fundraising events for Magnificat House, The Cenacle Retreat House of Houston and the University of St. Thomas Chapel Guild and Scholarship Fund. She is a Lady Grand Cross of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. She received many honors and awards for her service including the Standard of Christ Award given by the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Fran was deeply kind, humble, and gentle of spirit. She had a rich spiritual life and possessed a special affection for children, the abandoned, and neglected.
Fran and Hank were involved in charitable activities throughout their lives. Through these activities they formed a close circle of friends that was an abiding source of joy and fulfillment. They are missed by their family and all of their dear friends.
Fran was a truly loving mother and grandmother who left a legacy of compassion and service. She leaves to grieve her children, Dr. Michael A. Seger and wife Christine, Victoria Seger, Jane Seger, Dr. John Seger and wife Marian; her nine grandchildren, Dr. Michael V. Seger and wife Dr. Jennifer Seger, Hilary Seger, Andrew Seger and wife Kelsey, Dr. Catherine Seger, John Seger Jr., Stephen Seger, Caroline Seger, Sarah Seger and Lucy Seger, Andrew Seger and wife Kelsey; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Hazel Simmons and Marie Collins for their many years of selfless service to both Fran and Hank, and to Stephanie Rogers and Pin Oak Caregivers for their excellent care. The Vigil Service will be held at 7 pm Friday March 8, at Earthman Funeral Home, 8303 Katy Freeway 77024. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church 1801 Sage Road at 10 am Saturday March 9, 2013.
