Frances Huffman Moore passed away on August 9, 2012 at the age of 90, the culmination of a life overflowing with the love of her devoted family and countless friends.
Frances, youngest daughter of Bruce and RZ Huffman, was born on October 1, 1921 in Nederland, Texas. She grew up in Harlingen, Texas, where she was known for her friendliness and boundless enthusiasm. At college she met the man with whom she would spend the next 53 years of her life, James T. (Tom) Moore, marrying on Valentine’s Day, 1941. Over the years, Frances and Tommy were blessed with five sons, eleven grand children and nine great-grandchildren.
Frances was a beautiful person: loving, kind, self-less, and humble with a quick wit and an engaging personality. She loved travel, beginning with camping trips to Garner State Park in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and, upon Tommy’s retirement in the ‘70s, branching out to road trips across the U.S. and Canada. But they always returned to the places they most enjoyed, their second homes in Hunt, Texas and on the San Bernard River, where Frances loved to fish, especially for flounder.
Throughout her life, Frances was the quintessential loving wife, mother, and homemaker as well as a talented artist. That talent flourished in the 1970s when she created a series of arts and crafts workbooks, Mini Originals, featuring her designs with cornhusk dolls. A successful cottage industry ensued. She was also an accomplished, in-demand painter, working in oils, acrylics, and watercolors, specializing in landscapes and botanicals. Hundreds of her paintings over the last forty years now grace homes and offices throughout the U.S. And at age 80, she added contemporary and impressionist styles to her repertoire.
With all of her accomplishments, her biggest joy was being with her family, playing cards, dominos and giving art lessons to her great-grandchildren.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband Tommy Moore and son, Gary, and her sister, Eloise Hart. Her spirit and memory will live on through her brother, Mahlon Huffman of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; her sons and their wives: Larry and Edie Moore of Branson, Missouri, Chuck and Linda Moore of Austin, Texas, Steve and Karen Moore of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jack and Debbie Moore of Houston, Texas. The family is deeply grateful to Mary Moriel for her special companionship and care of our mother.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 12, at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.. Following a private graveside service, a celebration of her life will be held at Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Road, Houston, Monday, August 13, at 11:30 a.m. with a reception following at the church. In honor of Frances Moore, donations can be made in her name to the children’s art scholarship fund at Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Road, Houston, Texas, 77024.
