Evelyn Marie was born to the Late Wanda Lee Jones and Paul Jones in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She accepted Christ at an early age and was christened at St. Henry’s Catholic Church. She was raised in the “Carshop/Hillcrest and Prien Lake” Communities. She attended Calcasieu Parish Second Ward School, Washington Elementary, John F. Kennedy and Washington High. After graduation she worked with special needs children at Hamilton School for 12 years, and with the Head Start Program for three years. During this time she also began working as a Voting Commissioner, and did so for over 30 years.
Evelyn met her soulmate Johnny Clinton Thomas in October of 1969. The two dated for four years and then were married on June 16, 1973. It was then that she said goodbye to the school system. In 1974 she joined St. Paul AME and was a devout member for 44 years. She served as President of the Stewardess Board, Secretary of Sunday School; a LIFE MEMBER and past president of the Women’s Missionary Society, Program Chair, and Finance Committee. In addition to her service in kingdom building, along with her husband, the two made lifelong friends and traveled many places with their bowling league and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Evelyn Marie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Mr .& Mrs. Paul Jones; brother, Michael Jones; sister, Yvonne “Bonnie” Jones; and very special friends, Nancey B. Hayes, Joseph Simon, and Clarence “C.L.” Guidry.
In this life she leaves to mourn her precious memories husband, Johnny Thomas of 47 years; her daughter, Annetta (Jean) Anglade of Spring, Texas; son; Jason Louis (Atrina) Thomas of Lake Charles, Louisiana; siblings and bonus son, Alvin Harris of Westlake, Louisiana, Rita Mae ( Larry) Sterling, Marguerite Jones, Lois ( Alonzo) Green, Joyce (Rufus) Lovett, Gwendolyn Jones, Paul (Ursula) Jones, and Robert (Delores) Jones of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Eura Calvin (Linda) Jones of Houma, Louisiana, Roland (Natalie) Jones of Puerto Rico; three granddaughters, Ashley Jones, Katrina Cannon and Daniele Cannon of Spring Texas; grandson, Javin M. Thomas of Lake Charles, Louisiana; a special grandson, Jeremy Tucker of Houston, Texas; special friends, Frank L. Salier, Velma Smith Walls; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, three godchildren, and countless friends.
In this life Evelyn loved being a mother, wife, and grandmother to four beautiful children. She also loved to dance and sing; no matter how off the key. She hated to be wrong, and to be late.
