Evelyn Stewart (Ev) was born in 1947 in Germany to Bill and Lisa Stewart. Her parents met while her father was in the US Army, guarding witnesses for the Nuremburg trials. Lisa was a secretary for a German scientist and spoke English. She acted as a translator in the Nuremburg trials. Her parents moved to the US where her brother Malcolm was born in Kentucky in 1951 and her brother Gordon was born in Virginia in 1953. The family moved to Italy during her adolescence. Ev spent her early pre-teen years in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Her family moved to Bremond in 1963 when her father had a heart attack and retired from the Army. This is where she met her first husband, L. B. Slafka. They married in 1964, and in December of that year, Rick was born in Marlin, TX. Ev’s small family moved to Plum Dr. in Houston. She went to work at Texas Commerce Bank starting out as a Clerk then rose through the ranks to become the supervisor of the Safe Deposit Department and finally the Supervisor of the Commercial Loans Department. She met her current husband, Paul Maner in 1985 and they were married in 1988.
In approximately 1977, Ev and Rick went on a trip to the Magdalen Islands to see the harp seals and protest their killing for the fur trade. Ev became a champion of animals and a vegetarian. She protested the circus, hunting deer in Brazos Bend State Park, and the fur trade. Ev also volunteered for the Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) fostering animals and investigating cruelty. Recently she has used Facebook to raise the awareness of the cattle and pig industry and became a vegan. Ev has adopted many dogs over the years and has provided them a forever home.
Ev is survived by her husband Paul of Houston, her son Rick of Georgia, daughter-in-law Theresa, granddaughter Chloe, brother Malcolm of Houston, brother Gordon of Magnolia, and their families along with her half-brother Bud of Houston. Ev is now in a place where she can run with her animal friends and is no longer limited by physical issues. She will forever live in our hearts.
Her memorial will be held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday, April 7, 2018 at:
