Remembering Evelyn M. King Evelyn Moreau King, loving wife, aunt and friend passed away peacefully on Sunday, the seventh of September, 2014 at the age of 101 years. Evelyn, the older of two daughters, was born to Cornelius Dodd and Oscar Moreau. She received her elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Nacogdoches, Texas. She graduated from Texas College, Tyler, Texas and Merritt Business School, Oakland, California. Evelyn accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. As she grew up, she was active in Sunday school, choir and other youth activities. After graduating from Texas College, she was employed as a teacher at Goldsberry Chapel School in Joinerville, Texas, where she worked several years. During this time, she met and married the love of her life, Albert M. King, who was a math teacher at Kilgore High School, Kilgore, Texas. Shortly after marriage, Evelyn and Albert moved to Oakland, California, where she joined Beth Eden Baptist Church. In 1948, Evelyn moved with her husband to Cleveland, Ohio where they owned and operated a successful J. R. Watkins Products distributorship for over 40 years. While in Cleveland, Evelyn faithfully attended and was a devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church. Her service to the Lord, while at Antioch included: President and Financial Secretary of the Sanctuary Choir; Secretary of the Church Finance Committee; President, Treasurer and Financial Secretary of the Dorcus Bible Class; Secretary of the Watson Missionary Circle; and Program Chairman of the 50 Plus Club. Evelyn was also very active in civic matters on behalf of her community. Mrs. King, a woman of faith had a blessed life. She was generous, cheerful, courageous and fiercely independent. She lived alone in her home in Cleveland until moving to Houston early 2014 to be near her family. While in Houston, she was under the care of her devoted nieces, Autherine and Benaye Bell. She leaves to mourn her passing, many family members. Her surviving family includes another set of dutiful nieces, Beverly Adams of Mesquite, Texas and daughter, LaTosha Carter (Anthony), Fort Worth, Texas. Other caring family- Nephews, Kenneth Freo (Jean), Grand Prairie, Texas; Robert Freo and William Freo, Huntington Park, California; Grand-nephews, Stephen and Seth Freo; Teddrick and Todd Adams; great-grandnephew, Darrius Carter; Step-daughter, Verna M. Hilton, Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Ursula Lennox and James Albert Hilton; and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish loving memories, one sister-in-law, Eva King, Berkley, California and a host of caring relatives. Preceding her in death, are Evelyn's parents; loving sister, Myrtle; devoted husband, Albert; a grand-daughter, Ina Murphy and in-laws, Ben and Mae Beechie Harrison, Dan King, Bennie and Inez King Elmore, which were more akin to siblings in their love, support and loyalty.
