Evelyn Inez Graf Garner, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, joined her heavenly father on April 3, 2024 at age 101 while surrounded by her loved ones. She will forever be remembered for her sharp wit, her kindness and generosity, her love for her family and friends, and her undying devotion to her savior Jesus Christ.
Evelyn was born July 27, 1922 in Coupland, Texas to John E. Graf and Louise M. Melcher. In 1925 her family settled in Round Top, Texas. Then in 1928, they moved to their permanent home in Houston, Texas where she attended Hohl Elementary, Hamilton Junior High, and Reagan High School. After graduating from business school, Evelyn worked as a bookkeeper in the mortgage department at T.J. Bettes Company for 6 ½ years, Pan-American Production for 5 ½ years, St Matthew Lutheran Church for 6 years, and Shell Oil Company for 22 years. She enjoyed spending her time singing God’s praises and traveling the world as a member of the Houston Lutheran Chorale for 15 years. She also served her community as a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was an avid reader that also enjoyed sewing and doing handwork, and spent countless years volunteering at her church until the week before her passing.
Evelyn is preceded in death by both parents, husband Harmon W. Garner, sisters Edith Wolf and Joyce Little, foster-brother Jack Bruce, as well as her son Kevin H. Garner. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Garner Gregory; grandchildren Courtaney Davis and her husband Randy, Shawn York and his wife Amy, Kelly Woody and her husband Greg; great-grandchildren Ryan York, Jaxson York, Evan Davis and Avery Woody; and countless extended family and friends.
A funeral service will be held for Evelyn on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at eleven o’clock in the morning at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 5315 Main Street, Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
