Evelyn Delores Allen, 85, of Kingwood, Texas, passed away peacefully, Friday, November 17, 2023. Evelyn was born January 22, 1938 in Derry, Louisiana. She is one of five children born to Clarence and Juanita Brown Edmond. Evelyn graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School, Houston, Texas, and attended Texas Southern University.
She was married to Wilfred O. Allen for sixty wonderful years.
Evelyn began her professional career as a Nurses Aide at Lockwood Hospital. She later became a Medical Claims Examiner working for the Medical Society of Los Angeles County, the Milwaukee Medical Society, Blue Cross Blue Shield, John Hancock Insurance Company, Althea Health Strategies and Anthem Insurance Group, where she retired in 1995.
She was an active member in St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church, the Virginia Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women, the Phyllis Wheatley Class of ’56 Alumni Association and Manna House Third Ward Food Pantry. Additionally, she and Wilfred formed the Wilfred O. Allen Education Foundation, Inc., which provided college scholarships to at-risk youth from Houston, Texas.
She leaves a legacy for serving the Lord, and a love of travel, music and her family.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Juanita, her husband, Wilfred, her brother, Paul, and her granddaughter, Juanita. She is survived by her loving children, Rose Marie Whitney, Cheryl Allen, Michelle (Winthrop) Brown, and Damon (Anitra) Allen, as well as, numerous grandchildren, a great-grandson, her sisters, Carrie “Jean” Adams and Patricia (husband) Bell, brother, Fred (Pamela) Edmond and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038. Funeral services will begin on Tuesday, December 5 at 10:30A.M. at St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 3530 Wheeler St., Houston, TX 77004 with burial to follow at 1:00 P.M. at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038.
