A faithful and loyal servant to God and a friend and Mother to many
Eva was born in Karnes City, Texas on June 8, 1931 and was the eldest daughter of Petronilo and Andrea Herrera. While her parents worked the fields on their small farm in Leming, Texas, Eva assumed motherly responsibilities for her 10 brothers and sisters. In the 1930's, as the depression subsided and WWII began, the family moved to Sugar Land, Texas for work and better living conditions where Eva continued to help raise her siblings, sacrificing her own education to ensure they could attend school. During this time, Eva continued to grow in her faith and dedication to God.
In December 1945, Eva met the love of her life, Pete R. Medina, a WWII veteran. They immediately fell in love, married and moved to Houston, Texas where they settled and started their own family while continuing to support and raise her siblings and extended family. They established themselves in the community where she became a 50-year devoted member of Catholic Daughters of America in addition to many other school, church and community organizations. She also thrived as a successful small business owner in the East End. As such, Eva prided herself on doing her civic duty, never missing her right to vote.
Eva and Pete's faith and commitment to God was everlasting and their love story was truly one of a kind. She is preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Pete, her mother and father, 5 brothers, a beloved sister, a brother-in-law, several sisters-in-law, cousins and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
With every loss, she continued to be the matriarch of a very large family, a position she would hold until her very last breath. Eva's home was open to everyone and not a day passed that unexpected guests weren't welcomed with an offer of a cup of coffee, a plate of food or a loving hug.
Eva leaves behind 5 children: Gilbert Medina, Olivia Medina (Jeff Burger), Celia "Sally" Garcia, Pete Medina Jr., and Ginger Sarabia (Gilbert), 8 Grandchildren, 9 Great-Grandchildren and 4 Great-Great-Grandchildren, 3 sisters, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
Mother, your life has been an example to all of us. You have taught us how to be a caring and loving Mother, put God first, always have faith, to be accepting of the good along with the bad and to always love unconditionally. You leave behind a legacy of warmth and welcoming, lending a helping hand, faith and trust.
Thank you for being a Mother to all of us.
