Esther Flores Cathey was born May 10, 1938 in Houston, Texas to Luis and Susie Flores. She was the third of eight children and the first born daughter. Esther had 5 brothers and 2 sisters, David Flores, Ralph Flores, Vera Flores Edwards, Charlie Luis Flores, Alexander Flores, Gloria Flores Perales and Ellis Flores.Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald Cathey and brother Ralph Flores.
After graduation from Katy High School, Esther attended Lilly Jolly School of Nursing. She did not complete her studies choosing instead to marry and start a family. She never regretted leaving college because God blessed her with 5 wonderful children. 3 sons and 2 daughters. Ross Silva, Richard Silva, Cynthia Silva Collins, Debra Salazar Gonzalez, and Joe Anthony Salazar. 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Once her children were in school, Esther chose to work in the public sector. She worked 18 years for the City of Houston, water dept., and 32 years for Houston Community College in Admissions. She retired from HCCS January 31, 2020 and on February 10, 2020, was diagnosed with a rare type of Leukemia. She was a patient of MD Anderson Hospital when the Lord chose to call her home.
Esther lived in Spring, Texas. She loved the country and nature, flowers and fruit trees, being outdoors and fishing. She enjoyed country music and dancing. Esther was not a traveler. She preferred to spend her time with her family. She loved casual get togethers, outdoor cooking and loving on her grandchildren.
God blessed the Flores family with a very special and precious person in Esther. She was a private person, not one to talk much or make friends easily. She preferred family. If someone was sick or in need she was the first one there. Offering and giving anything she had. She once made the statement that it didn't matter if she died broke as long as she was able to help anyone in her family that was in need. She put action to her words and God blessed her richly every time.
There is already a vacuum in the family from the loss of such a giving and loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Our loss is Heavens gain. We look forward to being reunited with her when our Lord chooses to call us home too. We love you Esther. You will always live in our hearts.
