Eloise Laura Arnold Powers passed away quietly in Houston, Texas on Christmas Day, December 25, 2010. She was 89 years of age. Eloise was born in Woodsville, New Hampshire on January 1, 1921 to Everett M. Arnold and Laura Stubbard Arnold. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clovis Powers; by three sisters, Marilla Bixby, Diane West and Susan Kimball and by her three brothers, Gayle Arnold, Gordon Arnold and Everett Arnold.
She is survived by sons, Jeffry C. Powers and wife, Alma, and Joel E. Powers and wife, Jacquelyn. She is also survived by grandson Timothy P. Powers and two great-grandchildren, Averdeane and Valerie Powers. She wished to remember the children her son raised with Kathleen his late wife: Michael Short, Ray Short and Teresa Short Hall, and their respective spouses and children. She is also survived by many very special nieces and nephews.
Eloise loved flowers and raised them at her home of 62 years in Meadowbrook and she participated many years in the Meadowbrook Garden Club. Her other love was cats that she rescued, found homes for and raised far too many to name. She left behind Sunny, her current ball of fur. Sunny will miss his Eloise terribly.
Other organizations Eloise participated in were the Park Place Literary Club, the National Association for Retired Federal Employees, and Beta Sigma Phi (member-at-large). From the time she retired, she volunteered constantly until her health prevented her from doing so. Eloise was a fun, caring daughter, sister, mother, aunt, and friend. All who knew her loved her and she loved them back.
A Visitation will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 from 1-2pm and the Funeral Service will follow at 2pm. Eloise will be buried with her husband at the V.A. Cemetery, Houston, Texas.
If desired, donations may be made in her name to the Houston Humane Society, Second Chance Pets, CAPS, the VFW, DAV, or the USO.
