Ms. Elizabeth Ann Markey

Elizabeth "Beth" Ann Markey left our world July 21, 2017, to finally be reunited with her late husband, Robert Franklin Markey, in peace and bliss. Beth was born in Chester, Pennsylvania, and soon moved to Houston, Texas for most of her elementary school years. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1957 and immediately got a job as a secretary at a newly opened company called Griffolyn Plastics. During her senior year of high school, she first met her husband-to-be at the University of Houston's "Frontier Fiesta". She wrote later in her journal, "I fell in love with my soul mate when I first met him. Maybe it was the beard or the cowboy hat or just the way he fit in his jeans, but it was like the beginning of a new and wonderful life." Several years later, Beth and Frank would be married on October 26, 1962. In 1967, Beth left Griffolyn Plastics to bear her first son, John Eric. Four years after that, she had another son, Robert Sean. Beth did everything she could to help her husband with his job and once Robert Sean entered elementary school, she joined the school's V.I.P. program where parent volunteers could help around the school. She volunteered in the school library for six years along with spending time with the PTA. The experience gained in the little school library jumpstarted her into her career as Head of Desk at the Houston Public Library system for almost 10 years. During that time, she had two promotions, taking her as high up the employment ladder as was allowed for her high school education. Wanting a change of venue, she obtained a job as the Circulation Coordinator at University of Houston's M.D. Anderson Library. She received a promotion during her 10 years with the University of Houston, taking her as high up the employment ladder as possible again. Without a college degree, or even any courses, she proved what hard work could do for her and her family. Her hard work allowed her husband to retire early, letting him out on the golf course for several years. Unfortunately around the early 2000's he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and by 2004, Beth retired from the library to care for her husband til his death in 2010. During this time, she also cared for her mother, Betty, who eventually passed away in 2011. Her past several years she spent enjoying new friends she made in online computer games. Much of her joy came from cheering on the Houston sports teams: University of Houston Cougars, Houston Astros, Houston Texans, and Houston Rockets.

Beth was a beautiful woman, inside and out. She was kind, loving, caring, and giving. She would always make a sacrifice of herself to help others. The world is a poorer place without her, and she will truly be missed.

Beth leaves behind her two sons, John Eric and Robert Sean, her younger sister Amy Jo Brown and husband David, her grandchildren Fionna Ariel and Logan Caelis, and her nieces and nephews, Jill Jones and husband Dale, Kerrie Maples and husband Ron, Stephen Brown and wife Shannon, Jennifer Hurt and husband Reid, and Jonathan Brown and wife Shelly.
