Elizabeth Kathleen (“Kathy” or “Kat” to her family and close friends) Jones, 56, an 8th generation member of a pioneering Houston family, passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona on the 5th of November 2022. She was born in Houston, Texas on the 28th of March 1966, to Uriel Hawe “Paul” Jones and Carmen Eleonora Quinonez.
Due to moves by the family, Kathy attended schools in Kingsville, Texas; Houston, Texas; Pensacola, Florida; Thousand Oaks, California; Anchorage, Alaska; Scottsdale, Arizona; and graduated from High School in Kingwood, Texas.
Kathy attended Arizona State University in Phoenix, receiving a BS Engineering degree in Information Technology from ASU in 2000, and began a prominent career as a Technical Writer in the Phoenix area, where she lived for over 25 years. She was a 22-year member of the Information Technology professional society IEEE.
In growing up, Kathy particularly enjoyed the outdoor environments of Alaska, California and Arizona. So, it was a natural choice to live in Arizona. She was a very uplifting person, whose hobbies included photography and genealogy, as well as skiing and hiking with her 2 dogs in the Phoenix Mountain Preserves. She was an animal lover, with particular interest in cats and dogs. In the area of genealogy, she made some original contributions to the McAshan and McGowen family trees.
Although she never married, Kathy was very much a family person. She had a unique gift for friendship and was renowned within the family for her unfailing remembrance of birthdays, often sending cards of her own highly artistic creations, especially to her younger nieces and nephews.
She attended family weddings in Melbourne, Australia; Hawaii; and Massachusetts. She also traveled to France with family members to visit the Normandy Cemetery grave of her great-uncle James D. Jones, a bombardier whose plane was shot down during the D-Day Invasion of France. Her unfailing kindness to all will be long remembered.
She is survived by her mother and father; her brother Uriel Edward Jones; her brother Stephen McAshan Jones, his wife Nathalie, and Stephen’s children, Sarah Leda Jones, Stephen Jones, Jr., Christian Alexander Jones, and Uriel Augustine Jones. She also leaves behind her uncle Hugh Lenox Scott III; her aunt Beverly Floyd; her cousins James Floyd, with whom she was particularly close, Aaron Floyd, and Stephen Floyd, Jr. and their children Ella, Jamie, Corrine and Coral Floyd. In addition, she leaves behind many cousins, aunts and uncles in Colombia. She was very close to Helen Alfa, the mother of Sarah Leda Jones. She also leaves behind Jason Oshop, a very close friend of many years with whom she shared two dogs Kirby and Dabs. She will be greatly missed by all.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation and sharing of remembrances with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon to seven o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 14th of November, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The Mass of Christian Burial is to be offered at ten o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 15th of November, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3617 Milam Street in Houston, where Reverend Monsignor James B. Anderson is to celebrate and Pastor, Reverend Peter Damian Harris is to concelebrate.
The Rite of Committal will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Kathy’s honor be directed to the National Breast Cancer Foundation at https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/get-involved/give/
