Eleanor Sue Bales Murray was born March 13, 1941 in Houston, TX, the only child of W.W (Bill) and Alma Hannefield Bales. She was freed from the limitations of her dementia on May 22, 2017. Eleanor was predeceased by her parents and her beloved spouse of 48 years, J. Gordon Murray. She is survived by her only child Samantha Murray, her brother-in-law Jay D. Murray, and his wife Marylin Faulkner. Eleanor graduated with honors from the University of Houston where she was a member of Alpha Phi. She went to complete her masters degree there as well. Eleanor was a math teacher in Houston ISD for 40 years, retiring in 2004. She began her teaching career with 2 years at Cullen Jr. High. The next 16 years were spent at Pershing Jr. High where she was a sponsor for National Junior Honor Society and the Number Sense Club. Eleanor graduated from Bellaire Sr. High in 1958 and returned there as a teacher in 1981 when HISD transferred the ninth grade to high school. She became a sponsor for the National Honor Society and continued to volunteer with the group until 2008. Eleanor was a member of the Texas Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an International Sorority for outstanding women educators. She loved teaching and her students. She also loved cats, reading, history, and traveling with family. After retiring, Eleanor and Gordon spent many enjoyable hours on the senior day trips sponsored by the Cities of Bellaire and West University or camping in their travel trailer. The family would like to thank everyone at Houston Hospice for their compassion and care during Eleanor’s final days.
Friends and family are invited to the funeral service which will be held at Forest Park Westheimer Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas, 77077 at 2:00pm on Sunday, May 28, 2017.
