On July 14, 1925 in Fulshear, Texas, Elbert Lee (baby)Dixon w born into a family consisting of her widowed mother, Sarah and her older sister, Jane. She started her life as many children do, even today , without a father, but her father would have been there at her birth except for the untimely occurrence of his death.
Consequently, Elbert Lee's mother was determined to keep her deceased husband's memory alive, so she named her newborn daughter after him.
Throughout Elbert's life, she was always thought to be a male until you met her, then you knew that she was in fact a girl.
At the age of seven, Baby was sent to live with her grandmother, Mary, in Houston where she started attending school regularly at 22nd Avenue Elementary (P.H.) Holden, because of her irregular school attendance in Fulshear. She was behind, but with her sweet spirit and disposition her teachers took a liking to her and helped her "catch up". Consequently, she completed elementary school, Harper Junior High School, and Booker T. Washington High School. (303 West Dallas campus) on time. She was a good student, Baby caught the entrepreneurial bug early but would have to wait to get started because she met a handsome young man who swept her off her feet.
Horace Strawder and Elbert Lee were married in April 1943 by the late,
Rev. Dr. E. D. Carrington, Pastor of Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Se remained an active member for many years, Horace soon joined the U.S. Marine Corp and baby became a military wife, stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Thus began her odyssey of life.
Throughout her life. Elbert Lee supported her children and grandchildren every way possible in their school and church activities. She was an active member of the Sunny side Civic Club. In addition, she worked full time in her chosen profession as a cosmetologist. Years. before, she attended Franklin beauty School. After many years she was able to establish her own hair salon. She moved from Sunnyside and settled in Corinthian Village, an adult independent community where she would find and join The Crossing Church.
Elbert Lee is preceded in death by her mother, sister and stepfather, LD Porter. She leave to cherish her memory six children, Horace Jr., Sandra (Earnest), Kirk, Johnny (Kay),Mary (Charlie), and Darrell. As well as her grandchildren including those she helped raise Kendall, Keith and Darrell, all of whom held a
special place in her heart. Additionally many great-grand children, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, co-workers and her long time friend, Alton Walker.
