Marian Elaine Evison was born in Denver, Colorado, February 17th, 1924 and resided in Denver’s South Washington Park neighborhood. She was active at Washington Park Community Church where she had many friends and met her future husband, Ben King, at a youth group function. They married in 1946.
She loved to reminisce about her days as a little girl, riding the local streetcar with her mother to visit Mr. Drinkwater’s soda shop, the Adler’s bakery, the movie theater, and all the other fine shops on South Gaylord Street, which was quite a novel shopping area for its time. Elaine was an excellent student and engaged in a number of literary and musical extracurricular activities. She graduated from South High School in 1942 and from Denver University in 1946 with a bachelor of fine arts. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, The Mortar Board Honor Society, and was a Diamond Circle member of Kappa Delta, serving as chapter president in 1943.
Shortly after their marriage, Elaine and Ben moved to Texas where they lived in Port Arthur, Amarillo, and Houston. They were long-time members of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. Elaine was a dedicated wife and devoted mother, leading by example with dignity and a sweet spirit. She was a talented watercolor artist and enjoyed this gift throughout her life. She especially enjoyed painting scenes visited by her and Ben on their annual summer trips back to Colorado. Elaine always enjoyed luncheons and bridge games with her dear friends and neighbors; she cherished the life-long friendships of those she and Ben had come to know in Colorado and Texas.
Mrs. King was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Ben H. King, Jr., and parents, Elmer J. and Roberta Eames Evison of Denver, Colorado. She is lovingly remembered by son Doug King and wife Nancy of Katy; son Gary King of Houston; daughter Julie Robinson and husband Steve of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; grandchildren Justin King and wife Jill, Lauren Noyes and husband Joel, Andrew Robinson, and Ryan Robinson; great-grandchildren Jeremy and Jenna King; and Evison Lou and Joel Patrick Noyes.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 19th, at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Taylor Canyon Fire Station (taylorcanyonfirestation.org), or a charity of your choice.
