Our beloved and wonderful Elaine Frances Crane, 63, of Houston, TX passed away on March 29, 2022. She was born in Dayton, OH on August 24, 1958 to the late Donald and Rosena Mauch. Her two children Eric Viney and Lauren Viney Cowan survive Elaine along with her husband Claude “Steve” Crane, whom she married on November 24, 2007. She loved and adored her four grandchildren, Dalton Cowan, Lillian Cowan, Brandt Viney, and Nolan Viney; they were her world. She is also survived by her siblings Ken Mauch, Nancy Moore, Linda Middlesworth, Marita Montgomery, and Larry Mauch.
Elaine graduated from Chaminade-Julienne High School in 1975 and then went on to play college volleyball and receive her Bachelors of Science in Education from Wright State University. It is here that her passion for volleyball took off and led her on a path of future playing, coaching, and refereeing where so many friendships in her life developed. Elaine’s time at Carroll High School in Dayton, OH as a volleyball coach are where some of the greatest memories of her have originated; she appreciated the opportunity to help mold young people into not only skilled and competitive athletes but highly regarded men and women of their communities. She also became a USA Volleyball National Referee, USA Volleyball National Scorer and PAVO National Referee during her volleyball career. Within those roles, she officiated for many Division I conferences in the NCAA and at the USA Volleyball Open, Girls and Boy’s championships.
Elaine was devout Catholic who gave her time, talents and resources to her parish. In her younger years, she and her family were well-known active and respected members of St. Anthony’s Church in Dayton, OH. Since moving to Houston in 2005, she has continued to be a dedicated member of St. Edith Stein Catholic Church in Katy, TX. Elaine was always giving her time as a volunteer for numerous events held at the church, served as a member of the Ladies Guild and was a mainstay in the choir. Those close to her will always remember the commitment to her faith as one of her best qualities.
Elaine’s family and friends will dearly miss her kind eyes, smile, laugh, selflessness, joy and love of travel.
