Eileen Eunice Jaeger Leedy went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday,
September 3, 2019. The beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt, died at
home in Houston, Texas, at 94-years old. But, if you asked Eileen, she would tell you she was
95 because she always rounded up to the next birthday.
Eileen was born December 1, 1924, to Adolph and Gertrude (Roesner) Jaeger in Lockport,
Illinois. She was the youngest of three children. She outlived her parents and her two older
brothers.
During World War II, Eileen worked as a Lab Technician for Libby Foods in their canning
factory. Eileen’s oldest brother, Eugene, introduced her to her husband, Alvin Wendall Leedy.
Al and Eugene served together in the Merchant Marines in Europe. After a short courtship,
Eileen and Al were married April 7, 1945, at Fort Trumbull, New London, Connecticut. They
had one son, Rick A. Leedy, born in 1950. Eileen outlived both her husband and son.
Eileen was always busy helping others and giving of her time. She was a schoolroom mother
when Rick was in school. She served her community by supporting the monthly Civic Club
meetings. She also served as the Precinct Chair of her district and was a dedicated volunteer at
the Harris County Republican party headquarters for many years.
Eileen was an active member of her church, St. Matthew United Methodist Church, for many
decades. She attended worship and Sunday School nearly every week -- first in the Friendship
Class and more recently in the Chapel Class. Over the years she was a member of The Lydian
Circle and The Garden Club, as well as serving in leadership positions on different committees.
The neighbors on Leafy Hollow Court were Eileen’s second “family.” She had a key to
everyone’s front door and was always available to water plants, feed pets, and pick up empty
garbage cans so the street looked nice. Animals were attracted to Eileen; all the neighborhood
pets, as well as the stray dogs and cats, seemed to find their way to Eileen’s front door.
Eileen is survived by her daughter-in-law, Brenda Young Leedy; her granddaughter, Joi Young;
Leafy Hollow “grandsons” Graham and Lee Hanley, who only knew her as Granny (Gran-E);
two nieces Nancy Davis and Betty Harvilla, and sister-in-law Pat Leedy. There are a host of
other friends and neighbors, too numerous to mention who will miss Eileen’s listening ear and
kind words of advice.
As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends
will leave footprints in your heart.” Eileen, thank you for your footprints on our hearts.
