Edwin James left this world for his heavenly home on April 23, 2020 with his family at his bedside. Edwin was born on November 16, 1931 in San Antonio, TX to Hugh and Frances James and soon moved to Houston where he graduated from Milby High School in 1949 where he was Senior Class President and chosen All State in Football and would meet his future wife Barbara Farmer. He would go to Baylor University on a football scholarship but left after his sophomore year to join the US Navy during the Korean War, where he served as a welder on board the USS Nereus (AS-17), a Fulton-class submarine tender. It was on the deck of the USS Nereus where Edwin surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and was changed forever. While stationed in San Diego, he married his wife Barbara, also a graduate of Milby High School. After his Navy service ended, he and Barbara would move back to Houston where he would go into business with his father and brother Scott as co-owners of James Soap and Chemical Company. Later in life, would go into business with his sons at Cleaning Products, where he would eventually retire. He spent his life serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and touched many friends and family with his faith. He was a longtime member of Park Memorial Baptist church and later in life, First Baptist Church of Pasadena where he sang in choir and taught Sunday School. He made many wonderful friends and influenced the lives of many children who knew him best for the unique funny hats that he wore to Sunday School.
Edwin was most proud of his family. He was father to 6 children and his love transcended to his 24 grandchildren, and his 32 great-grandchildren. When you were around Edwin, it was never a dull moment because he would try to make you laugh or smile with something out of the blue, whether it was a miniature pink rose from his rose garden or a small stained glass, or something else he had made, he loved to give people something to make them smile.
Edwin was preceded in death by his father and mother, Hugh and Frances James, his brother Scott, and his wife Barbara James. He is survived by his sister Evelyn Stevenson of Comfort, TX, his children David and Vicki James, Stephen James, Hugh and Tess James, Charles and Kristi James, Paul and Ann James, and Carol and Troy Burnett. He also is survived by 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank The Waterford in Deer Park, TX for looking after him in his later life and Silverado Hospice for his final care.
The family will be having a memorial service at First Baptist Church of Pasadena at a later date and asks that in Lieu of flowers that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Pasadena located at 7500 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena, TX 77505.
