Ed was born on January 8, 1934 in Elmira, New York, to parents Clinton Searl Janes and Bulah Benton (Dewey) Janes, joining his older brother Clinton Searl Janes Jr.
Growing up in Elmira, Ed was active in the Boys Scouts of America. When it came to school, he was always one of the best students in his class. So much so that at the age of 15, Ed won an essay competition that awarded him a trip to New York City.
Ed graduated from Thomas A. Edison High School in Elmira and went on to the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, where he earned both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in chemical engineering.
After graduating college, Ed accepted a job offer in 1957 from the Texas Company and started his 34-year career with Texaco at its refinery in Lawrenceville, Illinois.
It was in Lawrenceville that Ed met his future bride, Joan Schmidt, who lived nearby in Vincennes, Indiana. They were married on May 30, 1960 at St. John the Baptist Church in Vincennes.
After a few months spent working in New York City, Ed was transferred to Houston, Texas. He and Joan settled in their new home in Meyerland, where they raised their three children and lived for 54 years.
For more than 50 years, Ed was an active member of St. Philips United Methodist Church in Meyerland where he taught adult Sunday school. Ed also volunteered with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program, providing free tax preparation assistance to those over 50 with low-to-moderate income.
Once retired, Ed remained actively engaged with friends and former colleagues through the Texaco Retirees Association and his weekly bowling league at Palace Lanes. Ed and Joan spent their golden years traveling the world on cruises and visiting their children and grandchildren.
Ed is survived by his daughter Kathleen Janes Warfield (Robert) of Aptos, CA; his two sons Edward Francis Janes, Jr. (Joan) of Atlanta, GA and Lawrence Clinton Janes (Leslie) of Houston, TX; and his four grandchildren, Robert E. Warfield, Laura M. Warfield, Sydney K. Janes and Edward F. Janes III. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Joan (Schmidt) Janes.
Edward F. Janes will be laid to rest on January 21, 2022, joining his beloved wife Joan at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.
