Dwight was born on July 8, 1930 and raised in the Woodland Heights close to White Oak Bayou where he and his childhood friends would swim during the summer. He attended Travis Elementary, Hogg Junior High, and Reagan Senior High Schools. Dwight attended both Rice Institute and the University of Houston. He studied at the University of Houston, where he earned Bachelor’s of Science degrees in Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. He was also an avid tennis player. In 1948 he won the City Singles Tennis Championship while playing for Reagan High School and was also named the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Junior Singles Tennis Champion. He would go on to play collegiate tennis for the University of Houston on an athletic scholarship, lettering in 1951, 1952, and 1953.
In August of 1955 Dwight was inducted into the US Army as a Private and he was assigned to a special group called Scientific and Professional Personnel station at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He worked as a project engineer at the Engineer Research and Development Laboratory in Fort Belvoir where he was in charge of a Rapid Railway Destructor. This project was completed before his discharge in June of 1957.
Dwight then worked for a structural steel design company before joining the Texas Highway Department where he worked 38 years. After leading work in Hydraulics and Design Review, he led the Houston District’s first Consultant Design Section and completed his career with the department as the Director of the Right of Way Section.
In his retirement, Dwight continued his athletic hobbies and enjoyed traveling to Boulder, Colorado with his wife of more than 60 years, Barbara June Allen. He was involved in the Boy Scouts of America for many years and was especially proud that all his sons and grandsons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Dwight was predeceased by his darling June. He is survived by his three sons and their families: Quincy & Janet Allen, their son and his wife William & Susanna Allen, and their son Benjamin Allen; Russell & Pamela Allen, their daughter and her husband Hannah & Andrew Dahdouh; Rolland & Karen Allen, their children and grandson, Patrick Allen and his son Shaun Allen, Ryan Allen and Kayla Allen. He is also predeceased by his parents and parents-in-law and June’s sister Juanita Pyle. He is survived by Juanita’s husband Joe Pyle and their children and grandchildren.

A visitation for Dwight will be held Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008. A funeral service will occur Friday, September 30, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 2003 W 43rd St, Houston, TX 77018. A reception will occur Friday, September 30, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 2003 W 43rd St, Houston, TX 77018.
