Hon was diagnosed with glioblastoma in December 2014 and fought the brain cancer bravely and with quiet dignity. Since her diagnosis, Hon lived each day to the fullest. She travelled to Seattle, California, and Canada with her husband, children and grandchildren. Hon also travelled back to her homeland of Vietnam and fulfilled her life long dream of visiting Thailand.
Hon was born in Vietnam on May 18, 1945. She worked as an English as a Second Language (ESL) prekindergarten teacher at Port Arthur Independent School District for over 30 years. She positively influenced and shaped many young lives during her time as a teacher. Hon also volunteered at Chua Buu Mon Temple and with Catholic Charities as an ESL teacher. After retiring, Hon spent time with her family, traveled, worked in her garden, and attended the Buddhist temple.
Hon always had a special spot in her heart and a passion for giving to those less fortunate. Hon’s focus was for the sick and poor. During her last visit to Vietnam, Hon focused on giving to the children’s hospital in Vietnam and sponsored several programs at the Buddhist Temples. Her family has created the Hon Duong Memorial Fund to carry on Hon’s legacy of giving.
Hon is survived by her husband of 42 years, Trang Duc Duong; Lynn (daughter) and Jerome Mauricio; Thu (daughter) and Michael Nguyen; Sang Thi Nguyen (sister); Tan Van Nguyen (brother); and the following grandchildren: Dean Mauricio, Catherine Mauricio, James Mauricio, Alexander Nguyen, and Vincent Nguyen.
